Eagles Shuttle Costa Rica

Quick answer: A private shuttle from San José Airport (SJO) to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca covers roughly 215 km in about 4 to 4.5 hours, door-to-door, crossing a rainforest national park before reaching the laid-back southern Caribbean coast.

Where is Puerto Viejo and why go

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca sits on Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast, near the Panama border in the province of Limón. It is known for its Afro-Caribbean culture, reggae rhythm, golden and black-sand beaches, and some of the best surf in the country. The vibe is slower and more bohemian than the Pacific resort towns.

It is also a gateway to Cahuita National Park, the Jaguar Rescue Center and the wild beaches of Punta Uva and Manzanillo.

The route: what the drive is like

From SJO you cross the mountains through Braulio Carrillo National Park, a spectacular stretch of dense rainforest, before descending to the Caribbean lowlands. The road then follows the coast south through Limón toward Puerto Viejo. It is fully paved and scenic, with rainforest on one side and the sea on the other for the final leg.

Best time to visit

The Caribbean has its own climate pattern, different from the Pacific. September and October are often the sunniest months here, just when the Pacific side is at its rainiest. The coast is warm and humid year-round, with the best surf from December to March.
