Where is Monteverde and why go

Monteverde is a mountain region in the Tilarán range, famous worldwide for its cloud forest reserves, hanging bridges, canopy tours and extraordinary biodiversity. The main town, Santa Elena, sits at around 1,400 metres, so the air is cooler and mistier than the lowlands all year round.

Travelers come to walk among the treetops, spot resident quetzals and hummingbirds, and experience one of the most unique ecosystems in Costa Rica.

The route: what the drive is like

From SJO you head northwest along the Pan-American Highway across the Central Valley and Guanacaste foothills. The first two to three hours are on smooth, fast highway. The final stretch climbs a winding, partly steep mountain road into Santa Elena, with sweeping views over the Gulf of Nicoya on clear days.

That last section is exactly why a private shuttle is worth it: an experienced local driver knows every curve, and you can relax and enjoy the scenery instead of gripping the wheel.

Best time to visit

Monteverde is cooler and mistier than the rest of the country all year. The dry season (December to April) is best for canopy tours and hanging bridges, with clearer skies. The green season brings dramatic clouds and vivid birdlife, including quetzals in the early months of the year.
