Why Manuel Antonio is worth the trip
Manuel Antonio is one of Costa Rica's most beloved destinations, combining a compact national park with white-sand beaches and easy wildlife sightings. Sloths, white-faced capuchin monkeys, iguanas and hundreds of bird species live right beside the coast, making it perfect for families and first-time visitors.

The route: what the drive is like
From San José the modern Ruta 27 highway drops you from the Central Valley to the Pacific coast at Orotina, then you follow the coastal road south through Jacó, Parrita and the vast African-palm plantations before reaching Quepos and Manuel Antonio. The road is fully paved and scenic, with ocean views for much of the second half.
It is a comfortable, mostly flat drive with a couple of gentle climbs near the coast — easy even for travelers prone to motion sickness.

- Book ahead for December–April and around Easter week, when Manuel Antonio fills up.
- Note that the national park is closed on Tuesdays — plan your park day accordingly.
