Why fly into Liberia (LIR) for Tamarindo

Tamarindo is one of Costa Rica's most popular beach towns, sitting on the northern Pacific coast in the province of Guanacaste. The nearest international airport is Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, only about 70 km away. Flying into LIR instead of San José (SJO) can save you four hours or more of driving, which is why most Tamarindo travelers choose it.

From SJO the same trip takes roughly 4.5 to 5 hours across the country, so if your itinerary is focused on Guanacaste beaches, LIR is almost always the smarter choice.

The route: what the drive is like

The road from Liberia to Tamarindo runs across the dry, sunny lowlands of Guanacaste. It is fully paved and easy, passing cattle ranches, sugar-cane fields and small towns like Belén and Huacas before reaching the coast. You will notice the landscape is drier and more golden than the rest of Costa Rica, especially in the December to April dry season.

Because the drive is short and flat, it is a comfortable transfer even for families with young children or travelers arriving on a long-haul flight.

Tamarindo enjoys one of the driest, sunniest climates in Costa Rica. The dry season (December to April) is peak beach weather with reliable sunshine. The green season (May to November) is quieter and more affordable, with lush scenery and warm ocean water, plus good surf year-round.
