SJO or LIR for La Fortuna?
La Fortuna, at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, sits almost in the centre of Costa Rica, so it is reachable from both international airports. From San José (SJO) the drive is about 3 hours to the southeast; from Liberia (LIR) it is about 2.5 to 3 hours to the west, across Guanacaste.
If your trip starts or ends on the northern Pacific beaches (Tamarindo, Flamingo, the Papagayo peninsula), flying into LIR and doing LIR to La Fortuna is often the most efficient plan. If you also want the classic La Paz Waterfall stop, see our SJO to La Fortuna guide.
The route from Liberia
From LIR you head across the warm Guanacaste lowlands toward Cañas and the shores of Lake Arenal, Costa Rica's largest lake. The final stretch follows the lake with beautiful water and volcano views before arriving in La Fortuna. The road is fully paved and scenic throughout.
