Distance and Route Overview
La Fortuna de San Carlos, home of the iconic Arenal Volcano, is located approximately 140 km north of San José. The drive passes through the scenic Alajuela highlands, the breathtaking La Paz Waterfall Gardens area in Vara Blanca, and winds down into the lush jungle valley around La Fortuna.
The journey takes between 2.5 and 3.5 hours depending on your chosen transport mode and whether you stop at La Paz Waterfall — which we strongly recommend.

The La Paz Waterfall Stop
One of the biggest advantages of booking a private shuttle with Eagles Shuttle is the FREE stop at La Paz Waterfall in Vara Blanca. This stunning 37-meter waterfall is one of Costa Rica's most beautiful natural attractions — and it's right on the route from SJO to La Fortuna.
Most shuttle companies skip this stop or charge extra for it. We include it as standard because we believe the journey should be as memorable as the destination.
